That's right. Some of you might already know it. I have left 97.5 Love FM last month. I am no longer a DJ there. You will no longer hear me on that radio station. As much as I miss working at Love FM, I am happy to have moved on.

Have you always wanted to get into radio but never really knew what to do, where to go, and how to go about getting into radio? Here is your chance!

If you are Cambodian, have a nice speaking voice and a great personality, you can get a radio DJ job and be the next big DJ personality. In a typical radio DJ job, you’ll be introducing music, doing interviews, reading commercials, giving weather forecasts and sometimes traffic updates.

There will soon be an opportunity to work at a new English language radio station in Phnom Penh. That radio station will be like nothing your ears have ever heard before in Cambodia.

Do you think you have got what it takes to be a radio jockey? Show us what you got! Send us a demo tape (actually, what we need is a mp3 file) of how you would sound on air. Your demo should not be longer than 15 minutes.

Here is how you should do it.

1. Find a recording good audio recording source. Your best bet is a computer.
2. Find and install a program to record your voice. "Audacity" is a free recording application which would be easy to use.
3. Hook up a microphone if your computer doesn't already have one built in.
4. Prepare some scripts to include: weather, a short :30 second commercial, and a promotional announcement. Make sure you also introduce a song about to be played.
5. Decide the order you will record your scripts in. Make sure you use the station name. For this demo, pretend it is '109 Sample Radio FM'.
6. Practice what you want to say, sound natural and sound friendly.
7. Record your voice with the scripts you have prepared.
8. When you are satisfied with your presentation, save what you have recorded in MP3 format, and email it to us with your name, your gender, your date of birth, phone number, email address, as well as a short introductory letter.

Some extra tips for making your demo.

1. Listen to Capital FM - The UK's Number 1 Hit Music Station to get an idea of what we want you to sound like. www.capitalfm.com

2. Be sure that you are speaking proper English in a clear voice. Do not use slang and do not distort your voice. Be certain of word pronunciations. Be careful to avoid ending words short (an example of this would be saying "nothin'" instead of "nothing").

2. Know what you are going to say before you speak on the air. Essentially, this information is in your head, though you can jot down notes. If you open the microphone without an idea of what you'll say, your voice will trail off and you will end up saying, "Um" and "Uh" between words.

3. Sound friendly, but real. Let the audience feel that you are smiling as you speak, unless you are transmitting serious information. In both cases, sound authoritative. Listeners expect and assume the announcer knows what they are talking about to be factual and correct.

4. Don't repeat yourself, especially in the same break. If you stated something once, with a clear, authoritative voice, the message is received. The exception is the station identifier, which commonly opens and closes your break and sometimes appears in additional announcements.

Last Song Syndrome

So, you wake up in the morning and there is a song on the radio, or you pull up to your destination, and the last song playing in the car, you just cannot get out of your head. At first you don not mind it. You even find yourself humming it or singing it (in public) quietly. Then, while having lunch with your friends, that song pops up again. The weird thing is, you're not even thinking about it anymore. You dismiss it, knowing it'll go away eventually. But then, by dinner time, that blasted music is STILL playing in your head.

You, my dear, suffer from LSS... Last Song Syndrome. The Germans call that an Ohrwurm, literally an ear worm that crawls in there and won't get out. Not bad if it is a song you like, but sometimes it can be very annoying.

Now, what song has bugged your brains lately, and how did you cope? For me it was 'Lemon Tree' by Fool's Garden the other day... And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree...

Argh! The only remedy I know of is to listen to more music. Forget the old song by listening to a new one.

I found a helpful website that helps you take that last song syndrome out of you. Just go to www.unhearit.com. There is a player embedded in the site that will play a new catchy song for you. There is even a nifty little app they made for iPhones and iPods (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/unhearit/id394588168).

Actually, I meant I really like Kinky Movement. They are a trio of DJs and producers from Nottingham England. The group consists of Andy Mcloughlin, Lee Eden, Chris Grocock, John Symms and Hugh Turrel. They produce some real quality underground house music.

Here we are in December again. It is amazing how fast time flies. I can still remember preparing for my Christmas and New Year's gigs last year. Anyway, I have no particular gigs lined up for this end of year. I somehow miss spending it with friends and family. Now that I have a little bit more time I have put effort into making and recording sets. I opened an account with Sound Cloud and uploaded three mixes already. You can find my mixes on my blog itself here or on Sound Coud.

My first mix is 54 minutes long and contains some electro, some house and some hip hop tracks.

The theme of my second mix is swing and jazz with an electro twist. It's 34 minutes long.

My third mix is a totally different genre altogether. Reggae, dancehall and pop. 28 minutes.

Goodbye Darlin' Darlin'!

Ah good! I finally quit playing at Darlin' Darlin'. Buffy and I really liked the idea of working at Darlin' Darlin', but after just two nights there we were constantly challenged to reconsider our position there.
Darlin' Darlin' is not the kind of club we expected it to be. We thought that with the band performing, they'd be the ones singing requests from customers and that we, the DJs, would be doing what DJs do, playing sets of music. Turns out that we are expected to play as many requests as the band. There's something very wrong with this image. Maybe Darlin' Darlin' would be better off with a jukebox. What's the point hiring a DJ if you're going to tell the DJ which songs to play?
We as a rule will not play a song twice during a same set, unless we're really asked nicely. But we are not jukeboxes.
Also, we don't want to have to put up with all the crap from the manager there any longer.

So, we say adios to Darlin' Darlin'. Feeling very much relieved now. :-)

It's sad that Merit can't do the show anymore, but I am very happy to share airtime with Buffy, who I must say, is my best friend at Love FM. :-)

My 30th Birthday

Last week I turned 30. Good grace! I can't believe I am in my third decade of my life. I didn't want any big celebration. Anyway I am not the birthday kind of person. I went to Studio 182 with my man for a few drinks. My intention was to spend the evening with three to four friends max. But to my surprise around thirty of my friends showed up. The jazz singer there took me on to the stage and sang 'Happy Birthday' just for me. It was a very nice evening. I also met a few new people, friends from the internet and some fans too. It was a lovely evening. A big thanks to everyone who came and a big thank you to my man.

Goodbye DJ Merit

DJ Merit is leaving Cambodia and Love FM for one year. She won a scholarship to the USA. Although I and everyone else at Love FM is sad to see her leave, we are extremely happy that she has this opportunity to study abroad. I am sure this experience will change her life.

I bet she will learn a lot more about herself in that one year than she did in the past

because of the unique space in which she will learn, experience, and spend exploring another culture. Her time there will fundamentally change how she views the world and will give her the ability to view the world, and its issues, from several perspectives.

I wish her all the best in the United Sates of America and I sincerely hope that she will come back to work at Love FM when she comes back.

New Gig at Elements Club!

I am thrilled. After a four-month break from the clubs, I am back in the circuit. That's right, four months after I said adiós muchachos to the Riverhouse Lounge, I got myself a residency at Elements Club & Lounge. Starting this week, I'll be playing there every Thursday night from 10pm to 1am. Of course I won't be doing this alone, not without my best friend and DJing partner DJ Buffy will be working with me. I am very much looking forward to this. Last week, Buffy and I went there for a tryout. The equipment is fab there and I appreciate the security afforded to DJs.

I got a phone call from the office this morning. There are no more radio shows until further notice. I guess that will be until we've moved to our new location north of Camko City. We are still on air right now, but the signal is not strong enough. So for the time being, there are only playlists with non-stop music.

As all radio stations will be moving to Camko City, the current premises will be vacant, possibly demolished. I am just thinking about the cat that has been living here and roaming the compound for the past few years. This cat is nameless, belongs to no one, but she is just there.

This morning she looked very calm, almost sad. I took some time to admire her and for the very first time she let me touch her. She let me rub her belly and she purred from contentment. I guess she got used to having a lot of people around, eating leftovers from the office staff's lunches. This is all going to end when everyone will have moved. I am wondering what will become of her.

Love FM is moving

Time has come. By the end of August, the premises where I've spent the past two years broadcasting my show will be vacated. The studios of Radio 97.5 Love FM, 103 FM, and 88 Sweet FM are moving to a new location in Phnom Penh: Camko City.

TV3 has already moved there. Only the radio stations are still at their original location on the Russian Boulevard.

I am somehow excited about the move, but at the same time I know I will miss the old studio, even though it's quite cramped and run-down.

I'm quitting my Sunday Late Night Show on the radio

That's right. I've decided to stop working on Sunday evenings. I absolutely love working on the radio, but I usually find myself struggling to go to work every Sunday evening.

I need to have that day to myself, so I'm stopping the Sunday Late Night Show. I'll still be doing all my other shows though.

I don't know yet who will replace me, but I've heard through the grapevine that Dr. Love wants to have my time slot. Maybe he'll get it, maybe he won't.

Anyway, I'll let you all know as soon as I find out.

Diva-Licious Club DJs

And now a have new job in addition to my radio job. I am a club DJ!!!
Since March of 2009, DJ Buffy and I have been DJing at the Riverhouse Lounge every Monday night and on Friday nights, DJ Buffy, her sister DJ Mandy and I play downstairs at the Riverhouse, in the small booth in front of the restaurant.

It started as a deal between the Riverhouse and Love FM. The owners of the Riverhouse wanted to revive an old project that was in place years ago. Back then, the Riverhouse used to hire some DJs from Love FM to play music and entertain the crowds at the Lounge. For some reason the project ended. If my information is correct, the Love FM DJs who used to do it moved on to different jobs or left the country.
Anyway, the project was revived and we radio DJs were asked if we were interested in participating in it. Almost all DJs were interested at first, but in the end only DJ Buffy, DJ Mandy and I made the necessary commitment.
So in February we began our DJ training. We went there three to four times a week. It was hard work, but it was fun and definitely worth it.
For Buffy and me it was a natural transition to make. Some DJs, like DJ Brett Angel, are club DJs first and then become radio DJs. For us it was the other way round. We started out as radio DJs (we're natural talkers, hehe) and then became club DJs. Of course we still have loads to learn. Starting next month we'll learn how to spin vinyl. :-)
I am so looking forward to it.

A Job I Had

I had an interesting job for a while. From December 2008 to January 2009, I had the chance to work on television. I worked for Apsara TV for two months.

I presented a French-Khmer show called "Correspondances" together with a Khmer girl called Rachana. I did the show in French, and Rachana repeated the same thing but in Khmer.

I truly enjoyed this experience. It was entirely new for me. I had never been on TV before. As fun and as instructive as it was, I don't think I'd especially want to do this same job again. At least not in French.
